Should a Startup invest in Paid Ads or focus on Organic Growth?

Since we started RankHigher, we have interacted with loads of startups and entrepreneurs. Some of these entrepreneurs are at their initial stages, bootstrapped and looking to get more customers.

A lot of them have approached us for getting SEO done for their website. Because, it is a well-known fact that SEO is necessary for a business to be discovered by potential customers online.

However as I interacted more with startups, I figured out that there is a common problem between all of them. It is the lack of money as well as lack of time which plagues them. And every startup, in its initial days faces this challenge. Most of them are chasing investors to get their first round of funding. And they only have limited money in the bank to help them sail through till investor money comes in.

6 Steps to Find Customer Pain Points

We are in business because we feel we are solving a customer’s pain point and the customer will be willing to pay us for our solution and the payment will be enough such that we will make a profit after we deduct the cost of providing the solution.

We develop a website with the intention of being discovered by potential customers. Search Engine Optimization forms a key component of this discovery.

But, one of the biggest challenges I have seen with a lot of companies is, they are not identifying the right terms that their potential customers are looking for. And as a result, even though they may be having the best product/service out there, they remain undiscovered. And this is detrimental to any business. After all, why do you want to be hidden away when your prospects are looking out for you?

A New Google Algorithm based on Factual Trust?

According to a recent article on New Scientist, Google is devising a new algorithm which will be based on Knowledge Based Factual Trust as opposed to the strength of links pointing to the article.

Google has devised its algorithm based on strength of backlinks as a strong ranking signal. As more popular and authoritative sites point to a page, the organic rank for the page will improve.

However, over the years, we have seen pretty crappy garbage sites ranking for keywords and they spoil the user experience. The websites having incorrect and false information may start trending the search results if more and more people link to the page.

Build Website for Your Audience – Not Google

Recently, I was invited for a session, to teach startups on SEO strategies. I believe that any SEO strategy is effective only as long as the business is willing to invest time to create a strategy that is in line with the business goals and objectives.

I had been writing often about treating SEO as an extension of your overall marketing strategy.  Unfortunately I see too many businesses treating SEO like a quick gimmick to enhance sales.  And this a fundamental flaw to your success.

SEO is not an overnight “Get Rich Quick Scheme”. It is not a strategy to find loopholes in Google’s algorithm and exploit them. The objective is never about ranking.
